Add a burst of tropical colors to your London holiday this spring with a visit to Orchids at Kew – an outstanding display of orchids presented by Kew Gardens from February 9th – March 3rd, 2013. The Kew Royal Botanic Gardens are home to the world’s oldest and most comprehensive orchid collections, and this spring all the colors and beauty of these striking flowers will be on display for visitors to the gardens to enjoy. While you’ll find orchids on display throughout the year at Kew Gardens, this special event promises to bring together a spectacular array of hybrid orchids in all their colorful glory!
The Orchids at Kew Gardens display will be set in the modern Princess of Wales Conservatory, which commemorates Princess Augusta and was opened by Diana, Princess of Wales in 1987. This extremely advanced and complex glasshouse is home to ten different environments, from dry tropical zones to rainforest conditions. The carefully tended orchids at Kew Gardens require varying growing conditions to produce their distinctive and colorful floral displays. There’s a hot and steamy zone for the varieties that thrive in a tropical climate and a cooler zone for the varieties that grow in tropical mountainous areas. The wet tropical zone at the Princess of Wales Conservatory will be transformed into a vibrant showcase of colors with stunning displays throughout the glasshouse.
