Coronation Service at Westminster Abbey
When Queen Elizabeth II was crowned in 1953, her Coronation in Westminster Abbey was watched by people around the world on television. On May 6, 2023, all eyes will once again be on Westminster Abbey as King Charles III will be crowned alongside Camilla, the Queen Consort. Westminster Abbey has been Britain’s coronation church since William the Conqueror was crowned there in 1066. Following this long tradition, King Charles III will be the 40th reigning monarch to be crowned in this beautiful setting.
The Service will begin with a procession, known as “The King’s Procession,” of The King and The Queen Consort from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey where the Archbishop of Canterbury will lead the solemn religious ceremony. The King will be crowned with St. Edward’s Crown while Camilla will be crowned with Queen Mary’s Crown, each one with a fascinating history. Expect to hear beautiful music, including twelve pieces commissioned especially for the Coronation.
After the service, the newly crowned King and The Queen Consort will return to Buckingham Palace accompanied by other members of the Royal Family in the grand celebratory “Coronation Procession.” Expect plenty of pomp and ceremony … and a very enthusiastic crowd lining the roads along the way! The crowds will gather in front of Buckingham Palace for a glimpse of The King and Queen Consort and the Royal Family on the balcony – a favorite part of the eventful day.
